Horton in Ribblesdale, North Yorkshire – St Oswald

Friday 10 February 2023 was not the nicest day to be driving round the Dales, but as it is the first wet day we have had on a week’s holiday near Settle we can hardly complain. We stopped in Horton in Ribblesdale – not the easiest village to park in – and went to discover St Oswald’s church (SD 810721). Langcliffe, North Yorkshire – St John the Evangelist

For the first week of February we had a lovely week in a cottage near Settle. On Sunday 5 February I called in at St John the Evangelist in Langcliffe because we saw a notice saying “books in church”. Unfortunately the real book lover couldn’t get in (according to the website they have a portable ramp for services). Cawood, North Yorkshire – All Saints’

I continued along the B1223 to the village of Cawood. It looked lovely and I passed what looked like a castle. I found  All Saints’ church is beside the River Ouse at SE578377 – http://www.allsaintscawood.org.uk/. Not a lot of parking nearby, but I found somewhere to leave the car and walked up to the church. Church Fenton, North Yorkshire – St Mary’s

February 1 2023 and I have an afternoon at Hannah’s in Yorkshire. I went for an explore and decided that first stop was Church Fenton. St Mary’s church is at SE515367. It is part of the Tadcaster benefice – https://www.tadcasterbenefice.org/st-mary-s-church-church-fenton. northernvicarwalks – August 2021

I should entitle these monthly summaries “northernvicardoesn’twalk” or “northernvicarridestherails”. I only walked 20 miles this month. I rode lots of trains. The Wrexham Bidston line, Sheffield trams (though I had to walk the final mile when they took my tram out of service!), the Apedale Railway, two days in Bristol (including a ride through St Philip’s Marsh Depot), Edinburgh and the tram, Birmingham (with two freight lines), and Bedford/Leighton Buzzard. You know it is going to be a bad month when, on 1 September, you go for a 5 mile walk which has as one of its goals, posting a small parcel at the Post Office. Hannah had prepared it, and asked you to post it to a friend of hers’. northernvicarwalks August 2020

I’ve already blogged the National Memorial Arboretum and my 5 mile walk there on the 1st of the month. We opened St Edmund’s in Allestree on 2 August – so both my churches were open within three weeks of it being possible. I commented it would have been so helpful if the Church of England had provided all the signage we needed – which they did, in the middle of September (8 weeks after I’d needed them). northernvicarwalks June 2020

Covid continues, aided by a shambolic government. We learned about social distancing and managed to get one church open for Private Prayer. I made lots of phone calls, and posted on facebook every day. Here are my ramblings. I managed several walks north from home, out over the hills behind Quarndon. A total of 37 miles this month takes my total to 225. We managed two days out, both in Yorkshire. This picture seems appropriate. Renishaw Hall Gardens near Sheffield are gorgeous. Harlow Carr Gardens near Harrogate are also gorgeous, and they have a good bookshop.

northernvicarwalks – January 2020 (everything else)

I started the year with a 7 mile walk – into town via Chester Green and back via Markeaton Brook – and on 3rd I did 5 miles which included a wander past Darley Abbey Mill. Tadcaster, North Yorkshire – St Mary

Hannah (our daughter) now has a house in South Milford, North Yorkshire. As the bank of mum and dad have helped, I think that owning property in Yorkshire makes me a Yorkshireman! Anyway, we have new churches to investigate. St Mary’s Tadcaster is on the north side of the town, next to the River Wharfe – SE 485435.
