Ponteland, Northumberland – St Mary the Virgin

Time to blog my other church. We are in the middle of the town at grid reference NZ165729, and our church website is here. Tina and I have done our best to put a good selection of photos and news on the web – see “News” and “Archive”. Some of the photos on this blog were taken on 10 April 2016 and the snowdrops were earlier this Spring. I have added some others that are special from previous years. This sheet is the one produced for the schools about the history of the church. sheet for coates year 5 I have often said...

Milbourne, Northumberland – Holy Saviour (again)

I wrote “!It is ridiculous that I have never blogged my two churches.” Later I realised I have blogged Mllbourne, in 2011.  I have lots of photos, but it is never easy to find them. I went out on 10 April to take another set – if I find better ones I will edit the blog. You will find our superb church website here – I only have to look at it to tell you the grid reference is NZ117751. Indeed I could simply tell you to look at this page and stop blogging. The church is on the minor road...

Rothbury, Northumberland – All Saints

All Saints church in Rothbury is at NU057016, not far from the river. There is a benefice website. The church was open, so I bought a guidebook and a rather nice book The Valley remembers which is all about the WW1 dead. The noticeboard in the porch shows us that there is lots going on. There are some medieval stones too. There was probably an ancient foundation here, according to the guidebook the Anglo-Saxons this was a royal burgh. Perhaps the original church was destroyed by the Vikings or the Normans, there was then a C13 church which underwent...

Alnham, Northumberland – St Michael & All Angels

Sunday 13 March 2016. My daffodils are looking lovely. The sun was shining and we had a free afternoon. Northernvicar still has a lot of churches to do in Northumberland, so I made a quick list and we set off to do a couple. Alnham and Rothbury are the last two in the Croquetdale Team, so let’s go there. Up the A1, turn off on the Wooler road, turn off to Whittingham, and keep going. Stopping several times to check the map. We should have stopped to photo beautiful banks of snowdrops – in Whittingham by the river, on the verges...

Shilbottle, Northumberland – St James

I have driven up and down the A1 many times, but have never turned off into Shilbottle village. This was a mining village between 1728 and 1981, which is very hard to believe in this day and age – there are some good photos of the mine and the railway network at this flickr site (but do they really need to have “copyright” printed all over them?). A DAC visit to St James church, on a rather dull afternoon. The former vicarage is Peel House, next door – I want one. The medieval tower was added to in 1863...

North Sunderland, Northumberland – St Paul (again)

At the end of November I had a trip to North Sunderland for a DAC  visit as they want to do some work on the west end of the church. When I visited in September I got quite a few photos, there are some lovely Evetts windows (look back to see the rest), and another interesting one. On my last visit I missed the NER benches on the pavement outside. You can watch the branch line in a 1928 silent film on the British Pathe website.

Mickley, Northumberland – St George

I had been to St George’s church back in the summer for a DAC visit. I had failed to charge my camera, so Lucy (the DAC secretary) took some for me (thank you!). I paid another visit on 9 November 2015, so here is a blog. It is in a benefice with Bywell and Stocksfield, and they have a website. The church itself is south of the centre of Mickley Square, at NZ075617. Pevsner gives it two lines: “Originally of 1825, but almost entirely remodelled in 1886 by W.S. Hicks in the Dec style. Small but satisfying.” The original...

Bywell, Northumberland – St Peter (again)

When I read my older blogs I am surprised how short they are. It is a long time since I went to Bywell. We went back on Saturday 19 September for a Confirmation Service – we only had a couple of candidates (Maureen and Aidan) so it was lovely to join Corbridge Deanery and +Stephen. The patterns of the evening sun were lovely on the church. A lovely altar frontal. Some good glass – with a couple of Evetts. A great group of candidates, and the bun fight was good too. Thanks good folk of Bywell.

Mitford, Northumberland – St Mary Magdalene

Sunday 13 September, the final HOD church. After a 2 pm baptism Julie and I drove to Mitford NZ169856 to have a look at St Mary Magdalene – it is a lively village church that has a large following and a wide range of worship.  They have a website which has a paragraph about church history. I have visited on several occasions, but have not found the church open – it was today. The castle is opposite the church, and one day I must walk up there. It is likely that there was an earthwork fortification was begun around 1070,...

Morpeth, Northumberland – St James

On Saturday 12 September 2015, Heritage Open Day weekend, Julie and I went to Morpeth and visited St James. It stands on the north side of the town, grid reference NZ197863, slightly back from the road, and I had not realised quite what a large building it is. In 1842 the newly appointed Rector of Morpeth, the Honourable and Reverend Francis Richard Grey (the sixth son of Earl Grey of Howick) was faced with the problem of falling church numbers. The parish church was quite a walk and too small for the growing town, so he held a public meeting at the...
