Here endeth the Sabbatical

It is Sunday evening 27 July 2014. Yesterday my daughter was 27 – which makes me feel very old. It is the last Sunday of my three month Sabbatical, so today we had a Sunday off and went to the Bowes Museum in County Durham – website. It was the first time we have ever visited – superb. This exhibition is well worth seeing:   I am very fortunate to have had a Sabbatical – it has been a great three months. We started with a weekend in Greenock and Fort William. We visited Kelvingrove Museum – I will use the...

Castlebay, Barra – Our Lady, Star of the Sea

One of the things on my bucket list is landing on the beach at Barra. Barra is in the Outer Hebrides, reached in 50 minutes on a Loganair flight from Glasgow. On Monday 14 July the flight was booked for 0800. It was then changed to 0950. At 0915 we went to Gate 3, at 0940 boarded, and we had just sat down when the pilot said “There’s a strong SE wind so the tide hasn’t gone out far enough. There’s a foot of water on the beach and this plane doesn’t float. Can you go back to the...

Cockfield, Suffolk – St Peter

Cockfield is a village with eight greens. There’s a lot going on – see the village website. There is a lane from the war memorial, past the school, and up to the church – with beautiful Suffolk houses on either side. It is a stunning church – there would have been a Saxon village and church, and the village is mentioned in Domesday, as a prosperous manor held by the Abbot of St Edmundsbury until the Dissolution. Since then land has changed hands,  but there is at least one family still farming where their ancestors farmed 400 years ago. The first Rector whose...

Bradfield St Clare, Suffolk – St Clare

Another of my lovely Suffolk churches – a small hamlet, and a church surrounded by fields. One of the fields nearby is the one where Edmund was martyred. Hoxne in East Suffolk will tell you it was there, but we support Bradfield. It is known that his final battle was near Thetford. He lost and fled from the Danes. He would not have gone east in the direction of Hoxne, as that would be straight into the arms of the Danes, rather he would have used the old Roman road to head south – the road that passes through this parish. In...

Felsham, Suffolk – St Peter

Felsham is a village with the church in the centre, opposite the Six Bells pub, next to the shop and post office, with the village hall next to that. It had, and still has, a good community – we all appeared on stage with Fagends (Felsham and Gedding Extremely Nervous Dramatic Society). So 12 years after I left I walked in through the stunning porch and recognised Lesley, sorting out the flowers. She has aged far better than me – I baptised her children. It is lovely seeing her involved in church, and she brought me up to date with...

Gedding, Suffolk – St Mary

I was Rector of Bradfield St Clare, Cockfield, Felsham and Gedding for four years from 1997. Gedding is a small village, the church and the phone box are the only public buildings in the village, and Felsham church is not much more than a mile away. We needed to raise tens of thousands to repair the church. I dared to point out that for that price we could afford a chauffeur-driven limousine every Sunday to take all the congregation to Felsham … . We held a Festival “Gedding Church – too good to loose?” and the money came in....

The Cathedral Church of St James and St Edmund, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk

How can I write a shortish blog post about the Cathedral where I was ordained; where my four children were baptised (to be precise Theo was baptised at Addenbrooke’s Hospital and later welcomed into the congregation); where three were confirmed; where they sang as choristers (to be precise Hannah was only in the St Cecilia Chorale, the Cathedral Choir is boys-only); where I started as a Minor Canon in 1996, became Chaplain in 2001, then Canon Pastor in 2003 (or was it 2004 – I can’t be bothered to go and find the paperwork); where I baptised, married and...

Fornham All Saints’, Suffolk

The Feast of St Thomas the Apostle, and 50 of us for a Eucharist – much appreciated. 20 years since Ordination, and none of us looked any older! I went back the following day for a look round – the church is open every day. When I was here as a Curate, a teenager and an older lady arrived on the doorstep one day. “Could they look round the church?” I told them it was open and we got chatting. It turned out the young lady was a school-refuser and the older lady her tutor. The young lady could...

Fornham St Martin, Suffolk

Fornham St Martin is a village north of Bury St Edmunds. The full name of the parish is “Fornham All Saints with Fornham St Martin cum St Genevieve” – try fitting that on a marriage certificate! We parked by the Woolpack pub website – which was always welcoming – and found the church open. It is a lovely red brick porch, late medieval, and the noticeboards were well organised – one my hates is scruffy noticeboards! The tower is a result of a large legacy in 1425. Inside, I had forgotten quite how bright the kneelers are. Shortly before we...

Wordwell, Suffolk – All Saints’

Into Suffolk and my old benefice. The first church we stopped at was All Saints’, Wordwell. This is now maintained by the Churches Conservation Trust – fascinating how their sign has changed. They have an excellent website, and even a phone app. (I have downloaded the app, but need Harry to show me how it works!). It is a Norman building which had fallen into disuse by the early C19. In the 1850s it was renovated by the architect Samuel Teulon.   Over the door, inside the south porch, is a wonderful tympanum, and inside the church, another one....
