Elaine (who visited Warkworth with us) was back North – and we had a drive out. Holy Trinity, Cambo (NZ026858) stands just off the main road. It’s part of the Benefice of Kirkwhelpington, Kirkharle, Kirkheaton and Cambo – so close to home, but this is only the second I’ve done. A very nice leaflet tells you about the church and our faith.

There was a medieval chapel here, standing slightly to the east of the current church, and there are some lovely medieval grave slabs incorporated in the base of the tower.
We liked the children’s table at the back of the church – the middle section lifts out for the storage of felt tipped pens etc; so much nicer than a grotty plastic box. The font cover was made by Stephen Gay of Kirkharle – I wonder if he made the table too. The church was re-ordered in 2000 and looks all of a piece – no tatty carpet here.
The medieval church seems to have stopped being used around the time of Elizabeth I, and a new parish church was built in 1842-3, designed by John and Benjamin Green for Sir John Trevelyan of Wallington. (Wallington is now the National Trust property just down the road). In 1884 Sir Charles Trevelyan added the tower and vestry. We liked the stained glass windows with the Trevelyan owls, and two rather lovely angels – I like their peacock feathers. Rather a grey day, but a lovely church.
Is there a stained glass window in the Church dedicated to Charles Trevelyan who was the Permanent Secretary of the Treasury during the mid 1800’s. If so, is the Church opened during daytime. Thank you.

Visited the church to-day : it all looks so new – what does “re-ordering in 2000” mean. The table at the back, all the pews, the organ and carpets all look new! Beautifully decorated, and the whole church, both inside and out, is amazingly well-maintained.
I assume that they had a sort out in 2000. Probably took out some back pews and did the job properly. Excellent quality materials, well maintained and cared for. We know other churches that should have done that … how often we do it on the cheap, then wonder why it doesn’t last!
