Martindale, Cumbria – St Peter

Bampton to Martindale is not very far as the crow flies – a bit further when Clare is driving. Pooley Bridge, up beside Ullswater – we have promised ourselves a trip on the steamer later in the summer – and I was glad she was driving the zig zag to St Peter’s church, NY 436192 – website. I think it has a fortnightly service. The architect was J.A. Cory, 1880-2 – he’s another local church builder. Pevsner says “a prim Victorian church sits uneasily here” – it didn’t feel prim (nothing prim would have survived all these Cumbrian winters)....

Bampton, Cumbria – St Patrick

Let’s start 2018’s blogs with a day (Tuesday 16 January) to escape to Cumbria to see Clare. There was a light sprinkling of snow on the ground, and we drove out to Bampton – St Patrick’s church is at Bampton Grange, NY 521180. There is a village website – here – and a Parish Newsletter. I smile that Thursday’s event in the diary is “10 am Bus to Penrith” and Sunday’s is “10 am Holy Communion” – but it is sad that next Sunday’s service which, I assume, is in another church in a nearby village, isn’t listed. The...

Penrith, Cumbria – St Andrew

St Andrew’s church, Penrith, is in the middle of the town – NY516301. It has a website. I picked up a lovely flyer “A Church for all Seasons – The Wedding Season is all year at St Andrew’s – Begin your married life with God’s blessing – Christ in the heart of Penrith”. 10 out of 10! We started the day in their coffee shop – very nice scones, fresh out of the oven. Then we were about to visit the church and realised a hearse was pulling round the corner. We did the Brougham churches, and came back....

Brougham, Cumbria – St Wilfrid

We are parked on the north side of the A66 having visited St Ninian’s. We managed to turn right across the A66, and then turned left to go down into the village of Brougham. There is a car park opposite Brougham Hall, and the church is next to it. St Wilfrid’s Brougham – NY527284. The Betjeman Best Churches app – which has, sadly, since died when iOS11 updated my phone – said it was very special. Unfortunately it was severely locked and bolted, no welcome notices at all. However Clare did a bit of research and realised she knew...

Brougham, Cumbria – St Ninian

While on holiday in Orkney, Virgin Trains had a seat sale. Thanks to the power of web I organised a day with Clare, and got a single from Crewe to Penrith for £4 for Friday 15 September. We started with coffee, then headed out to Brougham. Brougham Castle is English Heritage – website – and will be saved for another day. We drove a little further east along the A66 to visit St Ninian’s Brougham – NY559299 – a Church’s Conservation Trust church – website. If you are visiting, approach from the Penrith direction, have someone else map reading, and...

Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria – St Lawrence

Monday 26 June is a day to escape on a Northern Rail rover ticket. I ended up in Appleby-in-Westmorland, meeting my friend Clare for lunch. We found a second hand bookshop – if you are having a day out with a beautiful young lady, always a good idea to purchase books for your wife. St Lawrence’s church, Appleby-in-Westmorland, is beautifully situated in the middle of the town,  grid reference NY683205 – website A simple leaflet and a fuller guide book – both very well illustrated with good photos. It has suffered from flooding twice in recent years, 2004 and...

Lazonby, Cumbria – St Nicholas

St Nicholas, Lazonby, is in the middle of the village, just to the east of the station – NY549397. There is a leaflet which gives a circular drive from Penrith via this church and three others. I like the welcome notice and Café church banner – but how many s’s in Mission? I googled Lazonby church and didn’t find much – I then searched for “East of Eden Mission Community” and found it – which is OK if you’re in the know. Finlay Hansford, my Godson, was being confirmed here on Sunday 21 May. We got there nice and early,...

Hadrian’s Wall Exploration 11 – Birdoswald

Before I start blogging Derbyshire, I really ought to finish my Hadrian’s Wall explorations. It is one thing to have walked the Wall (did I mention I walked it?), but I would like to use the pictures of the various sites. Birdoswald is over in the west, in Cumbria at NY616664 – English Heritage, website. They had what sounded like a wonderful kite flying Festival here early in 2016. A welcoming café, a holiday cottage you can hire (I like the idea of waking up in the middle of a fort), and a nice little museum. They have built...

Ousby, Cumbria – St Luke

The family of one of my Godsons live in Ousby in Cumbria and I had a drum kit for his brother (sorry neighbours). While there Clare and I walked to St Luke’s church, where they worship. It is part of the Cross Fell group of churches. Ousby is a collection of hamlets and the church (NY632344) has  lovely view – though the weather was not very good. The original church, apparently dedicated to St Patrick, was probably C13, and a rector called Barnard is mentioned in 1214. Tradition says that the church was derelict by the end of the following...

Hadrian’s Wall Exploration 5 – Whitley Castle Roman Fort

I have included the South Tynedale Railway – website – in previous blogs. It is a special line for me as Gareth drove diesel trains here. Here he is, in his element (7 June 2012). I came for a visit, to meet Clare (the mum of one of my Godsons), and we had a train ride to Kirkhaugh. It was a beautiful day for a train ride, and a beautiful day for a walk. We walked out of Kirkhaugh station and climbed up to the main road, then joined the Pennine Way. Clare had done this many years ago, but...
